Spring rambles and sketchbook drawings

Spring is here, and our drawing prompt is spring blooms.

Go on a walk, notice what’s blooming around you, and draw something that catches your eye, wildflowers, garden flowers, or tree leaves.

All you need is some paper and a pen or pencil (anything you can draw with). There’s only one rule: you must draw from life, on location.

Below are some of my sketchbook drawings.

Wildflowers (dandelion and wood sorrel)
White cape daisies and garden roses
Tree leaves

All of these sketches were done quickly with an ink pen in a pocket (3.5 x 5.5 in) Moleskine Cahier Journal.

I also did a few drawings at home from photos with brush pen markers in a large (5×8.25 in) Moleskine Classic Soft Cover Notebook.

Indian hawthorn
Mexican morning glory

I like using Tombow Dual Brush Pens for quick sketches. They have a brush tip on one end that works like a paintbrush to create fine, medium, or bold strokes and a fine tip on the other end, which gives fine, consistent lines.

Drawing tips and inspiration

Continuous line drawing is a fun exercise that can help you improve your observation skills.

Below are my continuous line drawings, each made in a single line. This exercise helped me warm up and draw the garden roses below more accurately.

I hope you’re inspired to bring your sketchbook on your next walk and draw from nature. Have fun! Feel free to send me photos of your drawings. I’d love to see them.
